If you love building a personal machine of cards and watching little trees sprout, Earth is one of the most satisfying tableau games out there. Just don't expect anyone to talk to you while you play it.
Best for: Solo players and engine-building fans who want depth over conflict
What it is
Earth is an engine builder where you grow a 4x4 grid of cards, each one a plant, animal, or terrain that fires off little chains of resources when you take an action. Maxime Tardif's big trick is simultaneous play: when one person picks an action, everybody else gets a smaller version of it, so you're rarely just sitting there. Add the stackable 3D trees that sprout on your cards and you get a table that looks alive. People compare it to Wingspan, but it's denser.
The catch
Here's the honest part. Earth is quiet. Really quiet. Reviewer after reviewer lands on the same phrase, multiplayer solitaire, because there's no card market to fight over and no take-that to ruin a neighbor. You're heads-down running your own machine, and so is everyone else. The icons are opaque, the rulebook is a known headache, and your first game will send you flipping pages. New-to-the-hobby players can drown in the sheer number of options.
Who it's for
So who's this for? If a perfect evening means building a tidy little resource engine and watching it pay off, Earth delivers some of the most satisfying tableau-building around, and it's a standout solo game (it won the 2023 Solo Award at the International Gamers Awards). If you want trash talk, blocking, and chaos, look elsewhere. It's a calm, brainy, beautiful machine. Bring snacks, because nobody's going to chat.
