The best cooperative board games, ranked
Co-op games flip the usual table dynamic on its head. Instead of beating your friends, you team up against the game itself, and either everyone wins or everyone goes down together. That one change makes them the easiest games to bring out with family, new players, or anyone who hates the feeling of being picked on.
This list is every cooperative game in the BGG Top 300, ranked by community rating. The spread is huge: quick card games, story campaigns that run for months, and brain-burners that will test your whole group. Click through to a full review where we have one.

Cooperative board games for beginners
Start with Pandemic. It's still the cleanest teach in the genre: cure four diseases, lose together when the outbreaks cascade, and everyone understands the stakes by turn two. The Crew is the other easy door in, a trick-taking card game where the table wins or loses each mission as a unit, and it costs about as much as a pizza.
Horrified deserves a mention for families: you're chasing classic movie monsters around a small town, and it's forgiving enough that a bad night doesn't feel like a beating.
Co-op campaign games that take over your calendar
The top of this list is crowded with campaigns, and that's not an accident: playing the same story with the same group for months builds the kind of loyalty that rates games at 8.5 and up. Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 is the classic run. Gloomhaven and Frosthaven are the hundred-hour monsters. Sleeping Gods is the one to pick if you'd rather explore than fight.
Fair warning: campaign co-ops need the same people showing up. If your group is flaky, buy a standalone co-op instead and keep your friendships intact.
Cooperative games for two players
Co-ops are quietly some of the best couple games around, since nobody goes to bed grumpy about losing. Sky Team is built for exactly two, a pilot and a co-pilot landing planes in silence. Arkham Horror: The Card Game and the Gloomhaven family all run beautifully as a pair, and The Crew has a proper two-player variant that works better than it has any right to.
The alpha player problem, honestly
The known failure mode of cooperative games is one confident voice playing everyone's turns for them. Some designs resist it: The Crew and Sky Team restrict table talk, so nobody can quarterback. Spirit Island gives each player a board too complex for anyone else to manage. If your group has a general, pick from those. If your group is the quiet type that likes being led, honestly, Pandemic with a strong teacher is a lovely evening.
Questions people ask
What is a cooperative board game?
A game where every player is on the same team, working against the game itself. Either the table beats the scenario or the scenario beats the table. There are 58 of them in the BGG Top 300, which tells you how good the genre has gotten.
What is the best cooperative board game?
Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 sits at rank 3 on BGG overall and is still the genre's benchmark. A few newer campaign games rate higher with smaller crowds. If you want one box, that's the one.
What's the best co-op game for beginners?
Pandemic or The Crew. Both teach in ten minutes, and both give you the full we-win-or-we-lose experience without a campaign commitment.
Are there cooperative games for two players?
Plenty. Sky Team only plays two, and most co-ops on this list run well as a pair since you're not competing for anything. Arkham Horror: The Card Game might be the best two-player game in the hobby, full stop.
Do cooperative games get boring once you've beaten them?
The good ones don't. Pandemic scales its difficulty, Spirit Island is a different puzzle with every spirit, and The Crew ships with 50 missions. Campaign games are the exception: once the story's done, it's done, and legacy games are done for good.
