The verdict

If you love poking at a strange world just to see what happens, this is a gem. If you need a winner and a scoreboard, you'll bounce off it hard.

Best for: Small co-op groups and solo players who'd rather explore than compete

The full review

What it is

Vantage is Jamey Stegmaier's open-world card game, and that's the honest pitch. You and up to five others land on an alien planet and just wander. Each turn you flip cards, see your spot in first person, and pick what to poke at. There's no scoreboard and no winner. The trick that makes it sing: actions don't fail. You only spend health, time, or morale to try things, so curiosity never gets slapped down.

The catch

Here's where it gets choosy. With 800 locations and 900-odd cards, there's constant grabbing, sorting, and putting cards back, and reviewers flag that admin as fiddly. At four or more players the downtime swells, since everyone sees their own location and you're mostly waiting your turn. Players who want tension, a tight engine, or a clear goal tend to bounce. No win condition can read as 'no point' if that's your wiring.

Who it's for

So who's it for? Small groups who like talking, theorizing, and building a story together, and solo players, who get one of the better solo experiences out there right now. Real reviews skew warm but split, and the split is honest, not a flaw. Play it at one to three, lean into the wandering, and don't expect a finish line. Treat it as a place to visit, not a race to win, and it's lovely.

A calm little game about birds that tables get weirdly competitive over.

Lovely tiles, simple rules, and a surprising amount of quiet cruelty.
