What it is
Inis is an area control game wearing Celtic mythology like a well-loved cloak. You're all chieftains squabbling over a tiny island, and you win by getting crowned king. There are three ways to do it: spread across six territories, share land with six rival clans, or hold sanctuaries in six spots. Each round you draft a hand of action cards, passing the rest along, so you're always reading what your neighbors might be planning.
The catch
Here's the honest part. Combat doesn't kill your guys outright; the loser picks whether to lose a unit or pitch an action card, and that nasty little choice is where the magic lives. But Inis runs on kingmaking. The moment you look like you'll win, everyone gangs up to drag you back. Players say it openly: show force too early and you're a target, sit too quiet and someone else takes the crown. It can drag past 90 minutes if nobody relents, and it's rough at two.
Who it's for
So who's this for? Players who want talky, political, knife-edge standoffs, not a quiet engine to optimize in their own corner. At three or four it sings. Reviewers keep calling it one of the best 'dudes on a map' games precisely because there are no dice and barely five minutes of rules. If your group sulks when attacked, skip it. If they grin and plot revenge, buy it and clear an evening.
