Maracaibo
A sprawling Caribbean engine-builder where moving slower usually wins you the game.
Designed by Alexander Pfister · 2019
If you want a chunky Pfister Euro with a clever push-your-luck rondel and a story mode that actually adds something, this is one of the best on the shelf. Just clear your whole table first.
Best for: Euro fans who love engine-building and don't mind a big table and a big think.
What it is
Maracaibo is Alexander Pfister's big Caribbean Euro, and it runs on one wonderfully mean idea. You sail a loop around the islands, and on your turn you pick how far to move. Go one or two spaces and you milk every action. Sprint five, six, seven, and you trigger the round's end for everyone else. That single choice powers the whole thing, the same engine that made Great Western Trail sing.
The catch
Underneath the sailing sits a deep card tableau you build into a personal engine, plus influence tracks for France, England, and Spain, an explorer push into the jungle, quests, and combat. Reviewers keep saying the parts mesh rather than clash. The story mode gets real praise too, layering quests and board changes over multiple games. There's a lot to hold in your head, and it rewards patience over flailing.
Who it's for
Here's the honest part. This game eats your table. Players warn it's cramped even on a three-foot square, and the late game gets fiddly as you track every card bonus you stacked. It can stall a thinky player into long silences. But solo play is excellent, the puzzle is rich, and the wins feel earned. If you want a heavy Euro with teeth, clear the table and bring it.
What other players say
This write-up is grounded in real reviews and player discussion, not just one opinion. A few worth reading:
