The verdict

One of the smartest light-medium bidding games out there, fast and friendly with a coin engine that hooks you. Just bring three or more players and don't expect a story.

Best for: Groups who want real strategy in 40 minutes without a rulebook hangover.

The full review

What it is

Here's the hook. You and 2-5 players bid coins to recruit dwarves from three taverns, and every dwarf scores in its own way. The twist is the coins themselves. Bid a zero and you trade your two leftover coins up into a single bigger one. So your bankroll grows as you play, and managing that little economy is the whole game. Serge Laget built something that teaches in five minutes and still gives you real decisions.

The catch

Now the honest part. At two players it sags, and most reviewers agree the magic needs a crowd to bid against. The theme is also painted on. The dwarf art is gorgeous, but you'll never feel like you're recruiting an army, you're sorting lovely cards. And if you want white-knuckle push-your-luck tension, this isn't that. Nidavellir is comfortable and steady, which is the point, but it won't make anyone gasp.

Who it's for

So who's this for? People who want a smart auction game that respects their time. It plays in about 40 minutes, sets up fast, and never leaves a losing bidder stranded, since every card helps somehow. Bring three or more players and it sings. If you love bidding games but hate the cruelty some of them dish out, this is the friendly, clever one to reach for.
