A genuinely sharp abstract that hides knife-fight tension under cute little figures. Older now, but the tension hasn't aged a day.
Best for: Couples and small groups who like clean rules with mean decisions.
What it is
Here's the setup. You're laying hex tiles around a map of old Japan to surround little figures: Buddhas for religion, helmets for the military, rice for commerce. Each tile you place pulls on the figures next to it, and when a figure gets boxed in completely, whoever has the most pull in that spot takes it. That's basically the whole game. Knizia, who never met a tight little math puzzle he didn't like, built something you can teach across the table in five minutes.
The catch
The catch is the win condition, and it's a beauty. You don't win by grabbing the most stuff overall. You win by having the most of two of the three figure types. So loading up on rice while ignoring Buddhas can hand the game to someone quieter. Players say the trick is to stop calculating and trust your gut a bit, because the board shifts every turn. The bluffing behind your tile screen, the boat tiles, the double plays: it all adds up to real tension in a short sitting.
Who it's for
The honest knock is player count. At two or three it's a clean knife fight where every tile matters. Push it to four and the board churns so much it starts feeling swingy and chaotic, and it needs everyone to actually know what they're doing before it sings. It's also a cold abstract with no story to hold. But if that's your thing, this is one of the best of its kind. Get it for couples or a sharp trio.
