The verdict

A clever, fast-moving Euro built around the morbid genius of timing your family's deaths. If you want strong theme woven into every cube, this isn't quite that, but the puzzle holds up beautifully.

Best for: Euro fans who like a tight, tactical engine and don't need cozy theming

The full review

What it is

Here's the hook that makes Village stick. Time is a resource you spend, and when you spend enough of it your family members get old and die. Designed by Inka and Markus Brand, it's a worker placement Euro for 2-4 players where you're pushing a little dynasty through generations. The twist: a well-timed death can land your elder in the Village Chronicle for points. You're not avoiding the reaper. You're scheduling appointments with him.

The catch

Now the honest part. Real players consistently flag two things. First, the opening is pretty prescribed. Marrying on your first action is almost always right, and skipping it hands you a quiet handicap. Second, the theme is thinner than the box art suggests. Reviewers admit they say "spend a pink cube" instead of anything medieval, because the colors stay abstract. If you came for Agricola's farmyard charm, you'll feel that gap. It can also run long when players dodge deaths.

Who it's for

So who's this for? People who like a tight tactical puzzle and don't mind dark humor sitting where cozy theme usually goes. It's medium-heavy but moves fast, turns are snappy, and the strategic paths (church, market, travel, crafts, council) genuinely diverge. It won the Kennerspiel des Jahres in 2012 for good reason. If you need theme dripping off every component, look elsewhere. If you want a smart engine that makes mortality feel like a spreadsheet you actually enjoy, grab it.

A calm little game about birds that tables get weirdly competitive over.
