The verdict

If you've got the time, the table, and a willing opponent, this is the Lord of the Rings game, full stop. Just know the dice get a vote.

Best for: Two patient Tolkien fans who want an epic, story-soaked duel

The full review

What it is

Here's the pitch. One of you is the Shadow, grinding armies across Middle-earth and hunting Frodo. The other is the Free Peoples, holding the line just long enough to sneak the Fellowship into Mount Doom. You roll a fistful of action dice each turn, and those faces decide what you can even attempt. Players keep saying the same thing: it feels like the books. That's the whole appeal, and it earns it.

The catch

Now the honest part. Both sides play almost nothing alike, so your first game is mostly just learning the machine. Real strategy shows up around game two. And the luck is real. Bad action dice can box you in for several turns, and the hunt tiles that wound Frodo are a draw, not a calculation. If output randomness makes you grind your teeth, you'll feel it here. The minis are also a bit soft and some tokens are fiddly to read.

Who it's for

But when this thing clicks, almost nobody walks away unhappy. Reviewers hand it perfect scores and players call it one of their favorite tabletop experiences, full LOTR-fan giddiness included. It wants two people, three hours, a big table, and patience. Give it that and you get a genuine war for Middle-earth. Treat it as a casual filler and it'll just sit there, beautiful and unplayed.

Wingspan

A calm little game about birds that tables get weirdly competitive over.
