The verdict

A loud, generous sandbox that's a blast with the right group and a slog with the wrong one. If your table likes to make their own fun, this earns its table space.

Best for: Groups of 4-5 who like open-ended, roleplay-friendly games over tight point optimization.

The full review

What it is

Western Legends drops you into a wild west town and basically says go be somebody. You roam the board wrangling cattle, panning for gold, playing actual poker hands, and starting shootouts, all chasing Legendary Points from whatever activity you fancy. The hook everyone latches onto is the choice between lawful and lawless. Climb the Marshal track and hunt bandits, or rack up your Wanted level and rob everyone blind. Both genuinely win.

The catch

Here's the honest part. This is a sandbox, so it only sparkles if your table brings the energy. Reviewers keep flagging the same things: at 2-3 players the board feels empty and nobody bumps into anybody, and at 5-6 the downtime drags while you twiddle your six-shooter. There's real luck too, from the dice and the poker-card draws, so a bad run can stall the strategy you wanted. Cautious groups make it dull.

Who it's for

So who's this for? People who'd rather write their own story than solve a points puzzle. If your group leans into the bit, plays poker, picks fights, swaps sides for the fun of it, this thing sings, and the multi-use cards keep every turn full of choices. If you want a tight efficiency engine with a clean win condition, look elsewhere. Aim for 4-5 players and a rowdy table. That's the sweet spot.

Wingspan

A calm little game about birds that tables get weirdly competitive over.

Lovely tiles, simple rules, and a surprising amount of quiet cruelty.
