A gorgeous, deeply thematic two-player duel that nails the Fremen-versus-Harkonnen fantasy. If you loved War of the Ring and have a willing opponent, this is an easy yes.
Best for: Two-player duos who want a thematic, asymmetric war epic and have an evening to give it.
What it is
Picture War of the Ring with the serial numbers filed off and sand poured into every crack. That's the honest pitch here. Maggi and Nepitello took their Tolkien engine and rebuilt it for Arrakis, so one of you plays the Fremen running a guerrilla insurgency while the other grinds the Harkonnen war machine across the map. The two sides genuinely play like different games, and that asymmetry is the whole reason this thing sings.
The catch
The caveats are real, though. This is built for two, and reviewers are blunt that three or four players dilutes the tension and stretches things toward the three-to-four hour mark. It's fiddly, with a pile of small rules and a board some find a size too large. The biggest letdown is spice: in the books it's everything, here it's just a resource you convert. If you wanted political intrigue, that itch stays unscratched.
Who it's for
So here's where I land. If you have a regular opponent and you loved War of the Ring, buy it without much agonizing. The miniatures are stunning, combat is quick and meaningful, and every game tells a tight little desert war story in a couple of hours. It's not a five-player party piece and it never pretends to be. Pair off, clear the table, and let the sandworms eat.
